Skumps!

Today I went to Rennes-le-Château on a quest for the holy grail and I totally found it:

Success! found the holy grail!

It was so easy, it was just lying on the path around the village! Maybe everyone has just been overcomplicating things with their conspiracy theories?

I also found out that, blocky 3D graphics aside, Gabriel Knight 3 took a lot of liberties with its depiction of Rennes-le-Château. None of this spot-on Munich business of the second game, turns out Gabriel Knight 3 was all "let's put in a hotel! Let's put in a giant fountain!"
That said, the things they did recreate were spot on and very, very cool (the church, Tour Magdela).

Whilst some things were indeed lost in blocky translation:

View over the valley

There was even a lone cat wandering around the village, which I would have used to make my cat-hair moustache but I was all out of masking tape. I bought a t-shirt with one of the texts from Le Serpent Rouge on it as the best approximation to a Gabriel Knight t-shirt I could find. It smells like an arcane bookstore!

This wasn't the only fortuitous discovery I made in an arcane bookstore:

This bookstore has my approval!

It was a pretty great pilgrimage and, Gabriel Knight holy grail conspiracy theories aside, the views were awesome! Aude is my new favourite part of France.

Tonight I've convinced Jenny we should watch Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade to top off our grail day (and investigate the accuracy of Venice). I wish I had a Euro for every time I said the phrase "cat hair moustache" to Jenny today. I am the best travelling companion ever.

In other news, Toulouse was short but good. I have many more photos of Toulouse and Marseille but they can wait til another day. Now we are in Carcassonne and are sleeping in a castle. Seriously, in a castle!

  2. Hi I saw a photo on your flickr of Jenny and a jug of beer, and I thought that Jenny was holding a straw and drinking from the Jug.

Jenny > straw > Jug of beer

    It made me happy :)

  3. Uncle Bret: Not pictured is the moment after I took the grail when suddenly I began ageing rapidly and turned into a skeleton. How could I have gone wrong with the grey plastic urn?

Sasha: Haha, if only that was Jenny with a straw. It was still pretty crazy how massive that beer was next to her! We had a sad moment the other day when we were having a conversation and realised you were the missing element needed to elaborate further on what we were talking about (I was trying to explain Green Porno to Jenny and not doing too well), and then we realised it was Friday and we were drinking beers and then your presence was missed even further!

  4. Good pics, Moriarty! The castle looks great.

My news is that I saw Mr. Paul Weller in concert at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York City last weekend! It was fantastic. Tracks included one by The Style Council ("Shout To The Top") and two by The Jam ("Pretty Green" and "Start!").

    cheers,
    Matt

  5. Ah man, Weller! Very jealous! I can't remember if I mentioned or not (quite possibly, due to the timeliness of this comment) but he was also playing a gig in Perth whilst I was away - mega sad to have missed it. Doubly so because he played a gig last year which I missed as well - and what are the chances of him coming back to Perth for a 3rd time?
Still, sounds like an awesome show! Wicked that he's still pulling out some Jam numbers. Would love to hear Thick As Thieves live - don't know if he ever does it but I'd definitely rate that as my favourite!
